Rural Eastern Virginia Writing Project

Outreach:  What REVWP Can Do for You

Picture
Teacher-Fellows, as part of their participation in the Summer Institute, have prepared and presented formal, professional workshops on a variety of classroom-applicable topics that may be of interest to your teachers or school division.  Workshop abstracts and topics addressed are available as part of each year's anthology, and can also be provided by request.

If you are interested in having a particular topic addressed at your school for professional development purposes, we can put you in touch with individuals who have already prepared and successfully presented workshops on the topic of your interest.  In fact, if you have Fellows in your school division who have attended the Summer Writing Institute, you already have within your professional staff individuals ready, willing, and able to conduct professional development on topics related to best practices in teaching writing.

Our Affiliation with EVWP (Eastern VA Writing Project)

The Rural Eastern Virginia Writing project is a satellite site of the Eastern Virginia Writing Project, which allows us to tap into the professional expertise and resources available to their site, housed at The College of William & Mary.  During our Summer Institute, we frequently welcome guest speakers from the William & Mary site, and welcome their added knowledge and expertise in addition to our own.  As we are a growing network of professionals, we are able to amass our resources, and to capitalize on the wealth of available knowledge and information that the EVWP site has to offer us as well.

Opportunities for Students:
Summer Young Writer's Camp

This past summer at Northumberland Elementary School (NES), the first Summer Young Writer's Camp was piloted for interested third through fifth graders.  Students completed an application which requested writing samples as part of the application process, and were then invited to attend the Camp, which ran during regular Summer School hours.

The Young Writers met for a total of seven days, during which they worked under a model much like the Summer Writing Institute.  Students began each day with a Morning Meeting and  journal sharing.  Writing activities ranged from biography and memoir to poetry, and a bit of everything in between.  Students created a professional brochure for new students, wrote about art and used the writing to create paintings, and even participated in a Writing Marathon.

Students published their writing in a variety of ways, including the poster-based website http://edu.glogster.com.  Students recorded audio of their writing for their online posters, typed their written work for their personal and group anthologies, and left after seven days having transformed from students into writers.

The REVWP was instrumental in supporting the goals and planning for this project, and would love to encourage other schools to create opportunities for Young Writers in their school divisions.  For questions or more information about how you can create a Young Writer's Camp at the elementary, middle, or high school level at your school, feel free to contact us!

For More Information on the Summer Institute:

Please visit the REVWP page, located under the 'More...' link at the top of the page.

Here you will find the information you need describing what it's like to attend the REVWP Summer Institute, what you'll learn, how it will change your teaching, and how it will change your attitude towards writing.  The Summer Institute is truly one of the most hands-on and realistically applicable opportunities for professional development available, as you will be learning by, from, and with peers who understand the challenges you face each day in the classroom.
