Students: What Do You Want to Write?

Picture
Writing is a chance for you to share your thoughts, explore your feelings, state your opinions, and play with words.  There are so many reasons to write!  First you need to believe that you are a writer.  Once you see yourself as a writer, there's nothing you can't do!  Try some of the activities below, and see which ones you enjoy the most.

Chances are, once you begin to write, you won't be able to stop!

Some Writing Ideas to Try:

Keep a journal or diary.  Write in it whenever you can, whether it is in the morning, when you get home from school, on the bus, or before you go to bed.  You can write about what happened that day, how you felt about the events of your day, your hopes and dreams, or anything you'd like.  This is yours, and it's private, so there's no need to hold back!

Create a scrapbook.  Chances are that someone in your family has a bunch of pictures, either old or new, lying around in boxes or saved on a computer.  Why not volunteer to put those photographs into a book, and write captions or stories to go with them?  You can ask the family members in the photos about what was happening during an interview or use your own memories, and write or type your reflections as part of the scrapbook.  The photos will have a permanent home, and your written memories will add a special touch to the photographs.  This makes a great whole-family project, too!

Make a family newsletter.  This is a great activity for over the summer after your family's vacation, or during the holidays, when other family members who live far away will truly appreciate your writing.  Write about recent family activities, special accomplishments of family members, upcoming family plans, and a reflection on why the time you are writing about was special.  You can send these to family members like grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins who live far away to keep them up-to-date about what's going on in your family.  You may even inspire them to create their own family newsletter!

Try poetry.  Poetry is a great way to share your feelings, thoughts, and observations on any topic you can think of.  Poetry doesn't have to be complicated or follow a set form, although some types of poems do.  Poems work when you focus on important words, simple ideas, and being you in the poem.  A great resource that gives lessons on writing poems, and even has templates for typing and printing your poetry is:
